golf technology

As technology gets better and better, so does everything else it touches. Lucky for you, this includes your golf game. With so much new golf technology on the market today, there’s no excuse not to improve those swings and putts!

So what kind of new golf gadgets can you expect to find in 2018? And what exactly can they do to help you improve and enjoy the game even more than you already do?

Well keep your golf shorts on, we’ve got just the information you’ve been looking for! Let’s look at the top 10 most exciting pieces of golf technology now available and how they can help you.

1. Garmin Approach S20

Need a comfortable yet stylish watch that can do it all? Look no further than the new Garmin Approach S20.

From analyzing rounds and shot distances, tracking enhanced data such as fairway hits and the number of putts per round, to tracking your steps, calories burned, and sleep patterns, this watch can do it all.

Oh, and it tells time too. Handy.

2. Flex Putter

Learning how to develop techniques for a smooth stroke AND good tempo can be challenging. Luckily there’s a new putter now available to save the day!

Flex Putter is a training aid that was designed to teach golfers exactly how to perfect their technique. Its graphite shaft flexes if it doesn’t hit the golf ball with a smooth tempo. It teaches how to properly release the putterhead.

And the experts seem to love this golf gadget. PGA Tour players Fabian Gomez and Patrick Reed use it themselves.

3. Stewart Golf X9 Follow

Gone are the days of ever having to lug around your golf bag again. You can now have your own personal caddy in the form of a robotic cart that will follow your every whim.

The Stewart Golf X9 Follow has a ‘follow mode’ that will enable it to tag along behind you as it carries your golf bag, as long as you are walking in front of it. When you stop, it stops. And if you so wish, you can switch it to a remote control option for more customized handling.

Just be sure you have the ‘follow mode’ turned off when you head down into the sandbar.

4. OnCore Genius Ball

The name alone kind of makes it exciting all by itself. But oh the things this golf gadget can do!

The Genius Ball is a golf ball that is trackable via an app. And not only that, the app can track stats for each shot, such as velocity, carry distance, how much it rolled, spin rate, and launch angle. It will also have a map of each course you play, showing you all of your yardage.

That really is genius.

The golf ball should be available at the end of this summer.

5. TP5 Golf Balls

If you’re looking for a different kind of golf technology than the Genius when it comes to your golf ball, the TaylorMade TP5 Golf Ball may just be the one for you.

This five-layered ball is designed to increase control, spin, and driver distance. A Dual-spin cover creates greenside control. A Tri-Fast core is made for increased velocity. And the rigid inner cover of the ball is ideal for maximizing spin generation.

And what’s not to love about any of that?

6. Putt Out

Ready to work on your speed and perfect your aim? This simple device is a ramp that turns your putting into an educational experience.

When you putt your ball onto the ramp, the ball rolls back at the same distance it would have rolled past the cup in real life. This enables you to see just how far off your putting may be… or just how spot on you really are.

And the best thing about it is, it’s portable. Take it to the office, into the next room, or on vacation with you. That way you’ll always be ready to practice that putt when the mood strikes.

7. Zepp Golf 2

When wanting to improve your golf swing, adding a smart glove to the mix may just be the helping hand you need – pun intended.

The Zepp Golf 2 is made up of a golf glove, an app, and a clip-on sensor. As you swing, the sensor collects data that then turns around and sends to the Bluetooth linked app.

And no need to worry about practice shots ruining your data. Since impact is accessed and a pocketed smartphone can measure hip turn, only “real” swings turn into hand, club, and swing movements on the app. These stats can then be later reviewed to learn and improve from.

8. Bushnell Hybrid

Rangefinder meets GPS in this beautiful hybrid introduced by Bushnell this year. As players are in need of more and more data, this device combines the benefits of laser use and a GPS all on an LCD screen.

By using the laser and GPS together, you’re automatically getting course recognition from front, back, and center distances, as well as distances to hazards. It also uses the same vibration-JOLT technology as other Bushnell models before it.

Plus it comes with an app that identities course updates through Bluetooth technology. Nice, right?

9. Ecco Cool Shoes

How would you like to have some comfortable shoes that not only let your feet breathe and stay cool, but are waterproof at the same time? Well, wish granted.

The Ecco Cool Shoes use a Gore-Tex Surround technology that allows your entire foot to breathe, stay dry and cool even in warm conditions, all while maintaining a waterproof protection. The air channeling system is like air-conditioning for your feet.

So, play on.

10. Game Golf Live Tracking System

Analyzing your shots in real-time can be a game changer – literally. But now you can also turn it into competition with your friends, on and off the course!

The Game Golf Live Tracking System attaches to both your club and a sensor clipped onto you. It will track your performance on how far and where every shot went. When you plot your weight into the course, the device can help you where you did well and where you can improve.

Online challenges let you compete with friends and other golfers! Talk about some fun motivation.

Zepp Golf 3D Training System

zepp golf 3d training system best golf swing analyzer

The Zepp Golf 3D Training System is easily one of the best swing analysis systems on the market.   The system is a combination of a small sensor that is attached to your glove, and a free mobile app (Android, or iOS).  The sensor connects with your smartphone/tablet device via Bluetooth, so you don’t need to be on a wireless network.  As you swing, the sensor will record thousands of data points along your swing path to help you find out where you need to improve.  The app will then display a 3D-model of your swing, so you can analyze it from every angle (360 degrees). You will visually see your club plane, club path, and hand path.  The app will also calculate your swing speed, swing tempo, and backswing angle.  You can also compare your scores to various professionals, and save your history, so you can track your improvement over time.

The Zepp Golf sensor is very small and lightweight, so you won’t notice it while playing.  It is also very reasonably priced, and is our choice as the best golf swing analyzer system on the market!

Blast Motion Golf Replay Swing Analyzer

blast motion golf replay swing analyzer

The newcomer to the swing analyzer market is the Golf Replay system from Blast Motion.  It was awarded as one of the “Best of 2016 PGA Show” by Golf Digest, and is supported by numerous players on tour.

The Blast Motion Golf Replay is incredibly easy to use.  You simply attach the sensor to the end of your club, and connect it to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth.  The system will automatically start to analyze your swing without the need for any complicated setup.  It will record swing metrics including backswing time, downswing time, tempo, speed, and numerous other useful metrics.

Unlike most other devices, not only does Blast Golf Replay help you analyze your swing for drivers, irons and wedges, it also helps you analyze your putting stroke!

One of the coolest features of the Blast Motion Golf Replay system is its video recording app.  Just record a video of your swing using the app, and it will automatically overlay your swing metrics (speed, loft, rotation, etc.) on the video to create your own highlight film.  The metrics will appear in sync with your swing, and you can replay it over and over in slow motion.   Using the apps built in social media sharing, you can quickly show off your swing improvements to your friends via Facebook, Twitter, etc.

The one major downside of the Blast Motion system is that it is only compatible with a limited number of devices.  This is especially true for Android phones  (see full list of compatible devices here).   Iron and wedge swing analysis is also only currently available for iOS devices.

We expect Blast Motion to increase the number of compatible devices in the future, but until then, make sure you check the list above or your relevant store (iOS / Android) before purchasing!

SwingTIP Golf Swing Analysis & Coaching System

swingtip golf swing analyzerSwingTIP — made by the fellas at Mobicoach — is one of the cheaper and more popular swing analyzer systems on the market.  The  motion-sensing device clips onto the shaft of your golf club, and connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth.  SwingTip will analyze your swing across five main points:  address, takeaway, top-of-swing, downswing, and impact.  You can get a 3D-animation of your swing, as well as a video recording with stats like clubhead speed and swing speed, swing tempo, angles, and more.

The unique feature of the SwingTIP system is its integration with Mobicoach’s remote coaching service.  After you record your swing with SwingTip, you can upload your swing to the Mobicoach website, and receive live feedback and instructions from real golf coaches around the world!  (This feature is currently available for iOS only)

SwingTip is not without its flaws.  The device does not work well with left-handed swingers, and the company seems to have some quality control issues with their manufacturer.  Many customers have received faulty devices that have weak battery life or do not record your swing reliably.  Mobicoach does provide excellent customer service, so if you receive a faulty product, just make sure you contact them and they will send you a new device.

Overall, SwingTIP is solid entry level swing analyzer system, and is very budget friendly, currently costing around $118 (on Amazon)

SkyCaddie SkyPro Golf Swing Analyzer (iOS only)

skypro iphone

SkyPro Swing Analyzer is made by the same company that makes the popular SkyCaddie GPS devices.  The lightweight sensor attaches to the shaft of your club (just below the grip), and connects wirelessly to your iOS device (version 7.0+) via Bluetooth.  The device should fit almost all shaft sizes, and will help you track every club in your bag (including putter).  The SkyPro will  track your clubhead speed, swing path, club rotation, face angle, swing plane, shaft lean at address and impact, tempo, and more.

TheSkyPro has the best golf swing analyzer graphics and animations.  The detailed 3D-models allow you to playback your swing in multiple speeds (real-time, half-time, quarter-time, pause), and also gives you mulitple viewing angles (including zoom-in).  You can also compare your past swings to see what changed in your swing.

The SkyPro will also backup all your swings online, so you never have to worry about losing your swing history.

The main drawback of the SkyPro is that it does not come with detailed instructions, so it can be complicated and frustrating to initially setup.  It is also slightly higher priced than most golf swing analyzers, and is currently available for iOS (iPhone, iPad, etc.) and Android users.

3Bays Golf Swing Analyzer (iOS / Android)

3bays golf swing analyzer ios3Bays markets itself has the lightest golf swing analyzer in the world (0.33 oz.).  This is useful, since the club will feel the same when you swing  with or without the device attached. The 3Bays device fits onto the butt end of your club instead of the shaft.  This should also help keep the club feeling the same whether you swing with or without the device attached.

As you swing, the device will capture up to 10,000 data points along your swingpath, which is then transmitted wirelessly (via Bluetooth) to your device.  You can view an extremely detailed animated version of your swing plane from the side or front, and also view numerous swing metrics like club head speed, face angle, tempo, down swing time, back swing time, impact force, ball speed, carry distance, and consistency.  Viewing just metrics alone is not very useful, so 3Bays gives you the ability to compare your swing to your own past swings, as well as those of various PGA/LPGA professionals.

Overall the 3Bays is very reliable, lightweight, and accurate swing analyzer.  For just over $150, it is also a good value buy.  Note that the 3Bays device is only meant for adults sized clubs, and will probably not work or fit with child-sized/smaller clubs.

There are seperate versions of the 3Bays Golf Swing Analyzer for iOS and Android, so make sure you pick the correct one!
