What are the Best Golf Club Brands?

When it comes to picking our golf clubs we look to not only the best golf club brands, but also to our favorite pro golfers. If these guys are doing well or winning with a particular brand of golf clubs we naturally think the same would apply to us. And we’re not wrong, because the innovations and technology advances that are made on the pro circuit filter down into the clubs that come to the market.

The following selection of the best golf club brands should be no surprise to you as they have all been around for a very long time, are steeped in heritage, have contributed much to the sport and continue to improve the game.

Let’s take a look shall we?

Best Golf Club Brands

Best Golf Club Brands Callaway logo

Callaway, as it became officially known in 1988, is best known for its Big Bertha Driver. “Big Bertha” has been so successful that Callaway now produces a whole range of clubs carrying the designation.  Every year this great tradition is carried on.  The CALLAWAY BIG BERTHA FUSION has incorporated a lot more carbon fiber composites. Technologically that sets it apart from the competition.

With pros like Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stensen, and Jim Furyk using Callaway, you’ll be in esteemed company.

Ping logo

Starting from humble beginnings out of a garage PING has grown into a household name (in golfing homes that is). The company’s original “PING 1A” putter made waves in the golfing world back in the late ‘50s.  You will inevitably see many old, trusty Ping putters still in the hands of low to mid handicap players.

With their latest sets of irons they have redesigned each club individually leading to unmatched precision for every distance.  Their colored dot fitting system helps all golfers to have the perfectly fitted club to their height and arm length.

Pros using PING includes Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, and Aaron Baddeley.

taylormade logoThe largest golf equipment company in the world certainly needs no introductions.  They changed the game with their metal driver in 1979 and have not looked back.  They claim the spot for the #1 Driver brand on Tour, with so many players using the M1 or M2. The M1/M2 designation is also carried by their game improvement irons.

The likes of Jason Day, Justin Rose, and Dustin Johnson are contracted to TaylorMade.

Titleist logoFounded in 1932, Titleist is perhaps best known for its golf balls. However, the company also produces and outstanding range of golf clubs with players such as Adam Scott, Steve Stricker, and Bill Haas under contract. Before moving to Nike, Tiger Woods was also contracted to Titleist; in fact Woods used a Titleist putter until the British Open in 2010.

The latest edition to their stable is the TITLEIST 917 D2/D3 driver. Golf Digest gave it the gold in their recent 2017 Hot List.

In the golf club department what really stands out is their range of Vokey Design Wedges by Master Craftsman, Bob Vokey. Their latest addition, the TITLEIST VOKEY DESIGN SM7 is a full update and does not disappoint.

Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Adam Scott all use Titleist.

Nike logo

Sadly Nike decided to stop producing hard equipment and only focus on soft goods or apparel. Nike has produced equipment for just about every sport imaginable, and it’s not just footwear. Their range of golf related products was of the same high standards and excellent levels of performance as everything else they do. Players like Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy used Nike on tour.

Their recent lines of hybrids, the VR_S Covert 2.0, Vapor Fly/Speed/Flex and their recent fairway woods, the Covert Tour 2.0, Vapor Fly/Speed catered to both golfers needing a low loft or a high loft. According to Nike’s website the, “New design shifts the body closer to the ground, reducing CG and spin for flatter, farther shots.” and it certainly delivered on this in spades.  If you are in the market for used golf clubs, do not overlook Nike as an option.

Who can forget the iconic Nike swoosh and Tiger teaming up for this:

You can’t go wrong with any of these as they certainly all fit the bill of the world’s best golf club brands. It’s simply a matter of personal choice and finding the right fit for your playing style and level. You may even end up with a mix of brands, a driver from one, a set of irons form another and then you find your perfect putter made by yet another brand.

All these brands have demonstrated that their clubs, new and old, will stand the test of time.  Throughout the years they have developed cutting edge technology, and pushed each other for top spot year after year.

New prices can carry some sticker shock, so if you are new to the game of golf and want to shop the used golf clubs market, there are many choices of clubs produced by the brands listed above that are a great value for the price.

Best Driver for Beginners

Drivers will most likely be the most expensive club in your bag. Modern drivers incorporate advanced technology that is leagues beyond what golfers used decades back. If you are interested in playing golf but lack the necessary knowledge about key elements then being introduced to the driver is a good place to start. Before we list the best driver for beginners let us first discuss what exactly this key golf club is and what to look for when purchasing one.

Choose one that Maximizes Distance

You will always want to hit the ball as far into the course as possible. Back in the day though it was believed that to achieve this you need drivers that start low and shoots high up into the air. The only problem with this philosophy is that it produces too much backspin. If you generate too much backspin you will definitely get airtime but distance is another matter as the golf ball will basically just shoot straight up and then land back down. No, what you want is a shot that will generate a controlled backspin while it travels the course to increase distance.

Take the Loft into Account

This is actually a tricky one since there are many elements to consider when choosing the right loft and not everyone has the same level of backspin with their shots. Let us try simplifying this and say that if you have a swing speed of 75 mph you should be looking at a driver that has a 12 degree loft. The faster your swing speed the lower the loft but you need to experiment first before moving lower.

Do not overlook the Importance of the Flexpoint

Simply put, the flexpoint is the area in the shaft that bends during the swing and the point of impact. Think of it as your leg kicking a ball. If you have a slower swing speed then a club with lower flex point will be your ideal club as it can generate a higher ball flight. For those who swing their golf club fast, a high flexpoint is the way to go as it will produce lower ball flight.

What are the Best Irons for Beginners?

For beginners, learning to hit your irons can be a daunting task.  There are fat shots.  Thin shots. Long irons.  Short irons.  Pitching wedge.  Sand Wedge.  Gap Wedge.  Lob wedge!!!

The sheer number of clubs can be overwhelming.   Each type of iron also has its own situation to be used in.  This comes with experience and practice.  But, what type of irons should you start off with?  Which irons will make the learning curve easier, and help you improve the fastest?

In general, the best irons for beginners should feel good on contact, be forgiving, and easy to hit, so that you can gain confidence as you learn.  Here are a couple of other important aspects for beginners to consider when choosing a new set of irons.

Clubhead Design (Cavity back vs Blade irons)
The ideal iron for a beginner usually has a larger club face and more weight around the sole of the club instead of at the center. Irons with this type of clubhead are called cavity-back irons.  This helps in increasing swing speed and the larger club face means you do not need to be as precise as expert golfers (who more often tend to use blade irons).  Cavity back irons also have larger and more rounded soles which helps lower the chance of chunking the ball.  In general, cavity-back irons are much more forgiving than blade irons, and therefore are the better choice for beginners.

cavity back iron vs blade iron mizuno

The Shaft
Choosing the right shaft is essential for both beginners and veterans. Shafts are generally avaialable in two types of material (steel or graphite), and manufactured with varying degrees of bend or “flex”. Using an iron with the correct shaft flex based on your swing speed will give optimum results in both distance and precision. A stiff shaft is designed for players who have exceptional club head swing speed while more flexible shafts are for those with slower swing speed. To learn your swing speed you can ask golf shops to help you measure your swing speed with their equipment, and recommend a shaft type.

The Best Irons for Beginners – 5 Picks

Here are our picks of best beginner iron sets available today based on our own research and customer reviews.  For a complete set of good irons (usually eight clubs), you should expect to spend anywhere from $400 – $700+.  Anything over $1000 is generally overkill for beginners, or even intermediate players.

Adams New Idea Hybrid Iron Set

adams new idea hybrid irons set best irons for beginnersThis unique iron set from Adams Golf actually uses hybrids to replace your long irons (3-5).   Long irons are generally the most difficult to hit, especially for beginners.  They are one of the biggest cause of frustration when learning to play, so replacing them with easier to hit hybrids is a simple way to mitigate this problem.

The Adams New Idea irons are exceptionally easy to hit.  It features a new slot design that increases the face club’s “sweet spot” diameter giving you more forgiveness, and room to experiment with your swings.  It also helps increase your swing speed, which means more distance!

Overall, this is an ideal set for beginners as they willl help you hit more consistently. The are also available in a variety of shaft types to best match your swing.  This set is usually priced at over $800, but it is now available for just $218.  This is an absolutely RIDICULOUS deal, so make sure you get yours while you can!

Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Irons

nike vrs covert 2 steel irons best irons for beginnersThe Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Steel Irons Set is a higher end set that features top of the line design and technology.  It is an 8-piece set that includes 4-9 irons, along with a PW and AW (Attack wedge / Gap Wedge).

The shafts are available in steel or graphite, as well as 4 different flex options – regular, senior, stiff, and ladies.

These irons are not just meant for beginners, but also novice players, so they are perfect if you are looking for a longer term set that can be used as your game progresses.   The only downside is that they are a bit pricey (over $800 regular price), but they are easily some of best irons for beginners.

This is a great mid-ranged priced iron set, and excellent value for the quality of clubs.  Unfortunately they are only available in steel shafts with regular or stiff flex.  If you need more flexible, graphite shafts then these are not for you.

The Best Cold Weather Golf Ball for Winter

Want to play some golf this winter? You might notice that your shots don’t fly quite as far when playing in cold weather. This is not your fault though; it is common knowledge by golfers that the cold climate can affect the distance traveled by golf balls.  This is caused by a combination of higher air density in winter, and the fact that your balls (both types) are probably frozen solid.  Just think…how far could you hit an ice cube?

So, what should you do?  You can try to keep your balls warm in a thermos… but the more practical way would be to just use a different type of golf ball.

What kind of golf ball, you ask? Basically, the best golf balls for cold weather are ones with a low compression rating.  Low compression golf balls are normally used by beginners, or players with lower swing speeds.  But, in the winter, if you want to maintain your distance, then we recommend almost all players to use a low compression golf ball (compression rating under 70).  High compression balls are higher density, so in cold weather, the ball will feel much heavier, and will simulate hitting a rock.  That’s probably not what you want.

The main downside of using a low compression golf ball is that you lose some control and spin, especially around the greens. Although, when you are playing in winter, you will probably have more problems with your ball getting plugged into the ground.

Let’s take a look at the best cold weather golf ball options on the market today. Below is a list we compiled from a collection of user ratings and reviews.

The Best Cold Weather Golf Ball – 5 Picks

Wilson Staff Fifty Elite Golf Balls (12 pack)

wilson staff fifty elite golf ball best cold weather golf ballThis golf ball from Wilson was one of the first real low compression golf balls on the market.  Back in 2008, it was the softest ball on the market, with a 50 compression rating (hence the name).  Nowadays, there are lower compression balls, but the Wilson Staff Fifty Elite still holds is own. They offer excellent distance but not at the expense of complete lack of control.  As for cold weather golfing, the Wilson Staff Fifty are an excellent choice, and we definitely recommend any golfer to try them out if they are losing distance with their normal ball. The Wilson Staff Fifty Golf balls are also available in yellow and orange for easier visibility.

Best of all, right now, these excellent golf balls are available for nearly 50% off regular price (on Amazon)!  Get ready for Winter and pick up a 12-pack today!

With this amazingly low compression, it is one of the “softest” golf balls on the market, and also gives very little spin which helps players hit straighter and longer. This is particularly useful for playing on colder winter/autumn days when you would typically lose a lot of distance.  Pound for pound, this is definitely one of the best cold weather golf balls available.  They feel absolutely amazing coming off your club, and will go farther than you expect!

If you don’t like normal white balls, the Callaway Super Soft Golf Balls are also available in a variety of bright colors (yellow, pink, orange) to help you locate them easier.

What are the Best Golf Hats?

Hats aren’t just for looking cool.  As you battle your way through a grueling 18 holes on a hot summer day, wearing a golf hat is a simple and effective way to keep cool, and protect your head, face and eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays.   When you tee off, or line up a putt, wearing a hat can help give you some extra shade to focus on the ball.  If you’ve noticed, almost all every PGA golfer wears a hat when playing.  Of course, they’re getting paid big bucks to weir their sponsor’s hat, but if you want to look and feel like a pro, then you should consider wearing a hat.  All that’s left, is for you to start playing like a pro 🙂

To further protect your eyes, match your hat with a pair of the best golf sunglasses!

nike golf tech swoosh blue best golf hatsSwoosh!  Nike has been on top of the sports technology and apparel world for the past couple of decades so it’s no surprise that one of their golf caps made our list.  In fact, we could’ve filled this list with just Nike hats, but we thought we’d limit it to one spot per brand.  The Nike Golf Swoosh Front Cap is definitely one of the best golf hats that we have today based solely quality and customer satisfaction. Its wide 360 degree brim/visor will help protect your face and eyes, as well as the back of your neck.   The hat is “one size fits all”– the underside has an elastic band that will stretch to your head — but it may not fit well for people with extremely small heads.  It is a bit more expensive than your standard golf cap, but this hat is definitely an attention grabber, so if you want to stand out from the crown, then give it a try.  You may start to love it!

What is the Best Mallet Putter?

When picking your ideal putter you should pay attention to your stroke style. If you have an inside-to-inside putting stroke, a blade putter, normally toe balanced, will probably work best for you. If, on the other hand, you have a straight-back-straight-through putting stroke, you should go for a mallet putter which is normally face balanced. Mallet putters have increased MOI (Moment of Inertia) which works best with that putting stroke style.

Assuming you are the latter, let’s look at five of the best mallet putters on the market:

The Best Mallet Putter – Top 5

Pinemeadow Golf Men’s PGX Putter

pinemeadow golf men's pgx best mallet putterThe immaculate white finish on Pinemeadow Golf’s PGX mallet putter really makes it pop against the backdrop of the green grass. You will have no problems lining up the ball to the alignment lines on the putter head.

The putter is “tour-weighted” at 380g, 40g more than other putters, making it well suited for the more common faster greens. Putts are smooth with even forward spin and less skid making for a nice stable putting game all-round.

The weight is well balanced; however, there is a lot more power compared to a traditional blade putter. We suggest you practice with it at the range before taking it onto the course. The extra power will surprise you and you could end up overshooting the cup without striking any harder than you are used to.

It comes with a very handy custom PGX headcover, which you may want to use since some users report that the white paint finish is prone to chipping if left unprotected in your bag.

For a mere $40, this is one of the best deals on the market today!  If you are looking for a great mallet putter, then makesure you check out the Pinemeadow PGX!

wilson golf harmonized putterThis mallet style putter from Wilson has soft-feel grip designed just for Wilson and the grip is larger in diameter. The grip is quite stylish with the vertical seam design. It has a unique and very comfortable feel the moment you pick it up.

The face has multiple density areas in the micro injection insert. It is well balanced, although it is not as heavy as it may look at first glance. The weight is not that much more than that of a blade putters. If you are a beginner and on a budget, this is one of the best mallet putters you can buy yourself.

Odyssey Metal X Dart Long Putter

odyssey metal x dart long putterThe Odyssey / Callaway brand is well renowned for making the best putters on the market. Their Odyssey Metal X Dart is available in three shaft lengths: 43”, 48” and 50”. It features a Metal-X insert with a lightweight aluminum outer layer with oval depressions that take full advantage of the automatic lock with the golf ball dimples. This creates a lower takeoff with improved top-spin for less skidding and the most accurate roll available.

The club head has a midnight black finish created by a high tech process that results in a long-lasting, glare lessening surface.  Optimized weights in the sole create an ideal balance to get the best feel, control and precision on every stroke.

More experienced players will love the thinner and smaller pistol shaped grip. Manufactured using Lamkin’s patented 3GEN material, a soft synthetic rubber compound, there is very little vibration from the club and excellent feedback.  If you have nothing against long putters (officially banned by PGA starting 2016), then you should definitely consider the Odyssey Metal X.

Picking the Best Lob Wedge

Not all wedges are made equal. If you are a low handicapper that plays a little aggressively, then you want a wedge that will offer you less bounce, more backspin and give you the ability to play the ball no matter what the lie. If you are a beginner or a high handicapper, looking to improve your short game, you want some of the same things. You may want a little less backspin on your shots, until you can properly control it.  On our list below you will find the best lob wedge for your needs.

Factors to consider:

Loft – A lob wedge typically ranges from 58 degrees to 65 degrees of loft.  The higher degree will allow you to hit steeper/higher shots that land on the green with little or no roll.  Higher degree clubs also tend to be harder to master, and require a lot of practice before you can be confident enough to use in pressure situations. If you are still mid-high handicapper, the maximum loft you should get is 60 degrees.

Bounce – A club’s bounce is the angle between the sole of the club and ground.   There are usually 3 choices for bounce: high, low, or standard bounce.  High bounce clubs prevents the head from digging into the ground and enables the head to literally ‘bounce’ out of sand/rough .  Higher bounce is generally better for soft conditions (i.e. sand or high grass, deep rough), while a lower bounce is better for harder conditions (fairway, hard sand).   You should choose the bounce recommendations depending on the course conditions you usually play, as well as your swing style.

The Best Lob Wedge – 5 Recommendations

Cleveland Golf Men’s 588 RTX Black Pearl Wedge

cleveland 588 rtx black pearl best lob wedgeIf you struggle to generate spin on those all-important chips, pitches, shots from the rough or the sand, then Cleveland has the perfect solution. The 588RTX has U-Grooves that are 16% bigger allowing you to control the ball and maximize the spin. Surface and impact friction is increased by rougher, longer lasting laser milling. The wedge has an S-Sole which features a wider width at the heel and a narrower sole at the toe. This means the club is more adaptable than ever while also improving performance in the bunker.

This club gives you great control over your chips and pitches and even if your swing is a bit inconsistent it is very forgiving. Not only does it make it easier to hit the green, but the extra spin you can generate helps the ball hold the green every time.  Cleveland is famous for their wedges, and you will not be disappointed if you purchase one from them.

Callaway Forged Wedge (Dark Chrome)

callaway forged wedgeFrom Callaway, producers of some of the best golf gear available, this forged wedge has a “tour-inspired shape” with 21 closely spaced tour CC Grooves and “TripleNet” forging. This gives you a bit of extra yardage and a more controlled flight path. The “C” shape relieves the heel and reduces the width of the sole resulting in a straighter leading edge allowing you to make precision shots. If you are a low handicap and like to play aggressively around the greens this is the best lob wedge for you. Higher handicappers may want to look at a slightly more forgiving wedge as these are quite stiff.

The finishes are exquisite and really eye catching. Holding this wedge at address really inspires confidence.
