What is the Best Mallet Putter?

When picking your ideal putter you should pay attention to your stroke style. If you have an inside-to-inside putting stroke, a blade putter, normally toe balanced, will probably work best for you. If, on the other hand, you have a straight-back-straight-through putting stroke, you should go for a mallet putter which is normally face balanced. Mallet putters have increased MOI (Moment of Inertia) which works best with that putting stroke style.

Assuming you are the latter, let’s look at five of the best mallet putters on the market:

The Best Mallet Putter – Top 5

Pinemeadow Golf Men’s PGX Putter

pinemeadow golf men's pgx best mallet putterThe immaculate white finish on Pinemeadow Golf’s PGX mallet putter really makes it pop against the backdrop of the green grass. You will have no problems lining up the ball to the alignment lines on the putter head.

The putter is “tour-weighted” at 380g, 40g more than other putters, making it well suited for the more common faster greens. Putts are smooth with even forward spin and less skid making for a nice stable putting game all-round.

The weight is well balanced; however, there is a lot more power compared to a traditional blade putter. We suggest you practice with it at the range before taking it onto the course. The extra power will surprise you and you could end up overshooting the cup without striking any harder than you are used to.

It comes with a very handy custom PGX headcover, which you may want to use since some users report that the white paint finish is prone to chipping if left unprotected in your bag.

For a mere $40, this is one of the best deals on the market today!  If you are looking for a great mallet putter, then makesure you check out the Pinemeadow PGX!

odyssey metal x dart long putterThe Odyssey / Callaway brand is well renowned for making the best putters on the market. Their Odyssey Metal X Dart is available in three shaft lengths: 43”, 48” and 50”. It features a Metal-X insert with a lightweight aluminum outer layer with oval depressions that take full advantage of the automatic lock with the golf ball dimples. This creates a lower takeoff with improved top-spin for less skidding and the most accurate roll available.

The club head has a midnight black finish created by a high tech process that results in a long-lasting, glare lessening surface.  Optimized weights in the sole create an ideal balance to get the best feel, control and precision on every stroke.

More experienced players will love the thinner and smaller pistol shaped grip. Manufactured using Lamkin’s patented 3GEN material, a soft synthetic rubber compound, there is very little vibration from the club and excellent feedback.  If you have nothing against long putters (officially banned by PGA starting 2016), then you should definitely consider the Odyssey Metal X.

What’s the Best Putter Grip?

As the old saying goes, “drive for show, putt for dough”.  Whether you love it or hate it, your putter is the most important (and most used) club in your bag.   A simple, cheap, and often overlooked way to improve your putting (and shave strokes off your score) is to replace your grip.   The best putter grip ultimately depends on personal preference. It is up to you to try a couple different styles (fat, slim, etc.) to see which one is most suitable for you.  A good grip should allow you to hold your putter comfortably, lightly, and without any stress so that you can make more consistent strokes.  Below is our look at some of the best available choices on the market.

The 4 Best Putter Grips

 Superstroke Fatso 5.0 Putter Grip

superstroke fatso putter grip

“Fat” or thick putter grips like the Superstroke Fatso 5.0 have been gaining in popularity over the past couple of years.  Even pros like Phil Mickelson have made the switch to fat grips.  But, why?

It is shown that a thicker grip helps stabilize your putting stroke by minimizing wrist movement.  If you have a bad habit of hinging, or moving your wrist when you putt, then you should try out a fat grip.  A downside of fat grips, is you will lose some of the “feel” when contacting the ball, which make speed control a bit more difficult.  Like most things in golf though, this can be overcome with a bit of practice.

SuperStroke specializes in ONLY makes putting grips, and the appropriately named “Fatso” Putter Grip is their biggest offering and also one of the thickest grips available on the market (1.67 inch diameter).  Unlike normal grips, Superstroke grips are non-tapered (same width from top to bottom). This allows you to hold the club with even pressure from both hands, which in turn helps create a smoother and more consistent stroke.  The Fatso Grip is available in multiple colors, and will definitely help reduce unwanted wrist action in your putts.  One problem is that it is so thick that it could be difficult to fit in your bag.

Superstroke Slim 3.0 Putter Grip

superstroke slim 3.0 putter gripFatso Grip just a little too fat for you?  Then try the SuperStroke Slim 3.0 Putter Grip.  Despite its name, it is still a “thick” grip, and measures in with a 1.30 inch diameter.  Like its fat cousin, the Slim is non-tapered, which allows you to hold your putter lightly with even pressure from both hands, eliminating wrist hinging.  This will help you swing straight back and forth for a pure pendulum stroke.

It is the most popular SuperStroke model on the PGA tour, with over 100 players using it including Mr. Jason Dufner.  If the Dufman can win on tour with the SuperStroke Slim 3.0, then  maybe it can help you shave a few strokes off your game.

Odyssey Jumbo Putter Grip

odyssey putter gripOdyssey is the undisputed #1 putter in golf.  So, I would trust that they also make some decent grips.  The Odyssey Jumbo Putter Grip is their biggest offering, and is designed to remove any excess wrist action in your stroke.  It has slip-resistant surfacing, is soft to the touch, feels great to hold, and has just the right amount of tackiness.  It is perfect for golfers with big hands or arthritic conditions.  The Odyssey Jumbo Putter Grip is a tapered design and has a core size of 0.59.  You pay a little bit of a premium for the Odyssey brand, but for many people it is well worth it.

Winn Excel JumboLite Pistol Putter Grip

Winn Excel Jumbolite putter gripWinn is the leader in golf grips.  They are more known for making standard club grips, but also make some of the best putter grips.   The Excel JumboLite Pistol Putter Grip is their oversized offering. Winn uses a special Polymer compound that makes its grips lighter and soft.  Also it is more comfortable, tackier (slip-resistant), and shock absorbent than standard rubber grips.  The material and “pistol” shape help oversized JumboLite stay light while maintaining feel when striking the ball. It also helps dissipate water/moisture quickly to keep your grips dry in any weather.
